Policymaker Engagement

If you can help with this effort please reach out to Steve Hancock, stevendebbyh@yahoo.com.

Our Goal

To increase awareness among policy makers of the environmental significance of Sunnyland Beach, in particular as a wildlife habitat, and the importance of allocating resources toward larger remediation projects our area. We will identify opportunities to engage in dialog with decision makers to increase that awareness.

Our Objective
To leverage available grant money. Large remediation projects such as muck dredging and storm drain improvements are beyond the capabilities the POA or any of us individually.  Restoration of the Indian River Lagoon is a broad initiative with extensive resources being committed at the federal, state and local levels. .We will lobby government agencies to make undertakings in our area a priority.

Our Focus

Indian River Lagoon Citizen Oversight Committee

One channel we have identified is the Save Our Indian River Lagoon Citizen Oversight Committee, which oversees the allocation of resources to improve the environmental condition of the IRL. This committee meets monthly at the government complex in Viera and there is a public comment period at the end of the meeting. We can use this forum to help keep Sunnyland in consideration when resources are being allocated.

We need your help
The policy maker engagement committee is actively seeking Sunnylanders who are able to commit a few hours to attend these meetings, and if possible voice your concerns and tell our story during the public comment period. If you aren’t comfortable speaking just being there can be impactful. We suggest that all Sunnylanders sit together and wear an orange shirt; think of it as “respectful solidarity”.
